Obituary: Antonio Vasconcelos Marques (1908-1996)
Dr. António de Vasconcelos Marques died recently in his home in Lisbon. He had suffered a cerebrovascular accident a few years ago who left him incapacitated. Dr. Vasconcelos Marques was a pioneer in Portuguese Neurosurgery, and was the chief for many years of one of the largest Neurosurgical services in Portugal. With Almeida Lima, Obrador and Ley he founded the Portuguese-Spanish Neurosurgical Society. He was particularly interested in developing guidelines for the prevention and treatment of head trauma. He was a member of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons, where he chaired the Committee on Neurotraumatology from 1969 to 1981. The World Federation of Neurological Surgeons awarded him its Medal of Honor in 1983.
He was extremely active in national and international neurosurgical organizations, and was a member of the French, British, Dutch, Italien and Scandinavian Neurosurgical Societies. He never missed the meetings of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons of which he was also a member.
In his last years he was particularly dedicated to the National Academy of Sciences.
As his colleague, António Rocha Melo wrote in a biographical note published in Surgical Neurology in 1984, "his strength of character, self discipline, loyalty to his colleagues, and great concern for his patients, as well as his intense dedication to his field, all leave their mark on all those who came in contact with him".
